ARTIST STATEMENT

I first became interested in photography in 1966, at the age of 18, when I went into the Marine Corps.  The idea of capturing a moment in time fascinated me, and has continued to do so for the last 40 years.

In that time, I have come to understand that whenever the left side of the brain makes an attempt, albeit a profoundly lucid and educated one, to analyze and describe what the right side of the brain does and why it does it, it will, as a rule, completely miss its mark.

With regard to my photography, I can only say this:  I have long since learned that the images that meant the most to me were the ones with which I had an emotional connection. Whether the subject was a flower, a brick wall, or an anchor, it was my emotional and not my intellectual response to it that led to images that felt both alive and dynamic.  We all have an intellectual response to art, but it is the emotions we feel when viewing a painting, sculpture or photograph, that burn the deepest within our psyches.  Art without emotions is mathematics.

My photography has been exhibited in a number of galleries, among them: the Morris Graves Museum of Art (Eureka, CA); The Eureka Old Town Art Gallery; Reflections Gallery (Eureka, CA); the Center for Fine Art Photography (Fort Collins, CO) online gallery (www.artists-showcase.org); the Fraser Gallery (Bethesda, MD); the Alpan Gallery (Huntington, NY); Viridian Artists Gallery (New York, NY); Denver International Airport; and in the headquarters’ hallways and on the website of Pantone, Inc. (Carlstadt, NJ), the industry leader in color technology.
