ARTIST STATEMENT

The art quilt is a way for the artist I have always wanted to be, to express herself.  I love to quilt and experiment with new techniques.  My medium is fabric and thread.  Fibers add a texture depth to my art.

In 2005 I started experimenting with the “art quilt”.  Ideas keep coming so fast I can’t make all of them into quilts.  Taking an idea for an image and using whatever method I can devise to make that image into a quilted art piece is very challenging and rewarding.

I have sewn clothes since childhood.  I combine my sewing experience with computer experience to devise new methods and approaches to quilt making.  I have written a book about my very non-traditional mosaic picture piecing method.

Most of what I have been doing recently is using a photograph as a starting point and then making my art resemble that photo as closely as possible by various means.  I have done portraits as well as many landscapes.   My husband, Gary, pastor of a local Baptist Church, is also a very good amateur photographer.  I have used mostly his photos as my inspiration.

I have quilts for sale and will do special commissioned pieces.  Contact me if you have an interest.

Personal History:
I grew up in Arcata, CA and attended local schools.  In 1969 I married Gary Durbin and in 1970 we moved to Kansas City, MO to attend seminary.  We lived in that area for 7 years before returning to Eureka, CA where we now reside.  Most of my life has been spent being a pastor's wife, mother, and grandmother.  I have worked outside the home when there were no small children in my life – mostly at Simpson Timber Company.  In the church I play piano, lead choir, and work in the women's ministries.  God has blessed me in many ways.
