Personal Philosophy
Sometime while still sheltered by the non specifics of the Kindergarten curriculum my spirit dropped out of school. Oh, I attended with great regularity, but realized, even then, teacher’s wanted to hear what they though not what I might have imagined. I became “The Dreamer.” I moved through school leaving little trace of my ever being a student. Not until I was forced to announce my college major at San Francisco State in 1947 did I realize my life was without any direction. Twenty five dollars and a battery of tests indicated I was to follow a career in the visual arts. I questioned the sagacity of such a notion, for my only real art experience was challenged by my fifth grade teacher as being “a waste of good materials.” So much for strong beginnings.
My life moved irregularly until 1957 when I was allowed to teach the 6th Grade (in McKinleyville) on a provisional credential. During this time I met and married my dear Jane… finished the work for my Art major at Humboldt State College and was employed as one of six in the Art Department of Arcata High. With the opening of McKinleyville High I became the one man Art Department for a period of six years. Upon completion of my Masters degree I had the good fortune to join Floyd Bettiga as a member of the Staff of the College of the Redwoods.
As a teacher I actually realized the great joy of opening my students to the creative process… the process of becoming. They were the product. I carried this concept with me during the 25 years I taught at the College of the Redwoods and the five years I taught at Humboldt State University.
Like my students, I find in my art the continuing opportunity to become real. I too want to walk unencumbered like my hero Pinocchio: to be free and to know the Truth. |
