ARTS ALIVE!
Opening Receptions:
Edward Weston, Selections from the Permanent Collection: The Harry Blumenthal Photographic Collection, Stefano Cusumano
Performing:Kay Rose
With passionate vocals and hands flowing effortlessly across her keys, singer/songwriter Kay Rose paints songs whose moving lyrics and rich, haunting melodies strike a unique, yet familiar sounding chord. Inspired by the likes of Karla Bonoff and Joni Mitchel, Rose’s songs come from deep introspection and a profound curiosity about human conditions and life’s ironies. Her piano and voice create a texture woven together so elegantly that it evokes a beautiful melancholy that beckons the hearts of her listeners. Although often reaching into emotional depths, her songs are almost always resolved with a strong sense of hope and optimism.
Rose says she feels like her songs write themselves. “Thoughts and feelings turn into melodies in my head that come pouring out into the piano. Words come in layers, falling into place. Sometimes no matter how hard I try to rearrange or change them, they still fall from my lips in the original form when I sing them.”
Rose was singing to herself as a little girl and when her grandmother’s piano turned up in her home, playing and singing became her passion. Growing up, her parents moved often and music became one steady friend. By early teens, she began turning angst into original songs. Her music provided a means of both expression and escape through years of single parenting, a fast paced high tech career in the city, and struggles through love and loss.
Rose moved to Humboldt County to find a slower life and to better uncover the artist within. |

"Huaylli" means "song of triumph", and "Pacha" means "the earth". To simplify, "Singing to the Earth". Playing a blend of traditional and contemporary music from their homeland provides the listener with beautiful and mystical sounds that embody the magic of life, all creatures and all things.
