JUROR
JIM MCVICKER
At the age of 21, upon seeing 19th century French landscape paintings, Jim McVicker had an awakening to art. The beauty and sensitivity he saw in those works changed his perception of the world.
After attending art classes at Chaffey Community College in Southern California, in 1975 – at 24 years old – McVicker decided to become a full time painter. He moved from Ontario, CA, where he was born and raised, in order to start a fresh life as a painter. He ultimately settled in Humboldt County, drawn here by the beauty of the North Coast, the art community, and the chance to live a quieter, rural life.
With the exception of a couple adventures elsewhere, McVicker has remained in Humboldt since 1977 and it is where his education and growth as a painter flourished. Painting from life, in both a studio on his property and outdoors, he oeuvre contains landscapes, still lifes and figure paintings. He paintings capture the light, atmosphere, space, and mysterious beauty all around us.

Calling all artists! The Humboldt Arts Council will be accepting entries for the 27th Annual Junque Arte Competition and Exhibition at the Morris Graves Museum of Art. We look forward to seeing our community of artists on Wednesday, September 13th from noon to 5 p.m. for the submission of works. The exhibition will run from September 20th to November 5th in the Thonson Gallery. An opening reception will be held October 7th, from 6 to 9 p.m. during First Saturday Night Arts Alive! The exhibition is sponsored by Recology Humboldt County.
Eureka artist and long-time Junque Arte participant Tom Herd has been selected as the 2023 juror. Tom Herd attended the Arts Students League in NY, Valparaiso University in Indiana and Webster University in Missouri, obtaining a B.A. in Art Education and Master’s Degree in Communication Arts. During a stint in Chicago, Tom took classes in natural dyes at the Chicago Botanic Gardens that led him into the challenges of batik, which he practiced in the ensuing years. Having taught art in K through 12 public schools in the Midwest, his relocation to Eureka has allowed Tom to focus his artistic skills on batik, watercolor and assemblage. His work has been included in exhibitions at St. Louis University and Jefferson College, as well as many consecutive years in the Junque Arte Competition & Exhibition at the Morris Graves Museum of Art.
To be eligible, art works must be made of 100% recycled materials. Adult, Youth, and Group submissions will be accepted, and awards are given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place within each category as well as a Best of Show Award. Awards will be presented to this year’s winners October 7th at 5:30 p.m., prior to the First Saturday Night Arts Alive! The public is invited to attend.
